From Scrolling Instagram to Building an App: The Problem That Inspired Globiqo

By Temitope Segun Jongbo, Founder Globiqo

What began as a frustrating search for events on Instagram has evolved into an idea aimed at changing how people discover events, experiences and communities around them.

For Temitope, the inspiration behind Globiqo did not come from a boardroom or a lengthy business plan. It started with a familiar experience — scrolling through Instagram, visiting different pages and searching the internet in an attempt to find out what was happening nearby.

While living in the United Kingdom, Temitope wanted to discover events and connect with people. Although events and communities were available, information about them was scattered across different platforms.

One event could be promoted on an Instagram page, another on a different account, while others were listed on websites or shared through community groups.

The result, he found, was a time-consuming search with no guarantee of finding the right event.

The search that sparked an idea

In December, Temi found himself going through the same routine again — scrolling through Instagram, checking different accounts and browsing the internet for events.

It was during one of those searches that a simple question occurred to him: Why was there no single platform where people could find events happening around them?

That question became the foundation for Globiqo.

Rather than accepting the fragmented process as normal, Temi began considering what a more convenient solution could look like.

He envisioned a platform where users could open one application and discover events happening in their area, while event organisers could create, promote and connect with potential attendees on the same platform.

The idea also began to take on a broader dimension — creating opportunities for Africans living abroad to discover events and communities that reflect their interests and cultural backgrounds.

Why Instagram was not enough

According to the concept behind Globiqo, while social media has made it easier for organisers to promote events, platforms such as Instagram were not specifically designed for event discovery.

Posts can quickly disappear from users' feeds, while people may miss important information or have to follow numerous accounts before discovering relevant events.

For someone who has recently moved to a new city, the challenge can be even greater because they may not know which pages, groups or communities to follow.

For Temi, the problem was therefore not necessarily the absence of events.

Rather, it was the difficulty of discovering them.

The events were taking place. Communities already existed. What was missing was a more organised way of connecting people with those opportunities.

Building Globiqo around the problem

Globiqo was conceived to bridge that gap by bringing events and community experiences into one platform where users can discover them more easily.

The platform is also designed to allow organisers to create and promote their own events, creating what Temi sees as a two-sided community.

People searching for experiences can discover events, while those creating experiences can reach potential attendees.

The interaction between both groups, in turn, can help communities grow.

Giving Africans abroad a sense of community

Beyond event discovery, the idea has a personal dimension for Temitope.

His experience of living abroad exposed him to the importance of finding people with similar cultural backgrounds in a new environment.

For Africans in the diaspora, events can represent more than entertainment. They can provide opportunities to meet fellow Africans, celebrate culture, establish professional relationships, make friends and maintain a connection with home.

Globiqo therefore seeks to create opportunities for Africans living abroad not only to discover events but also to become organisers themselves.

An African living in London, Manchester, Birmingham or another city could use the platform to create an event or experience and connect with others within the community.

From one search to a bigger vision

The story behind Globiqo is rooted in a relatively simple problem: wanting to know what is happening around you.

Across cities, people are constantly searching for concerts, networking events, cultural celebrations, parties, workshops, community gatherings and other experiences.

The information is often available, but finding it can involve searching across multiple platforms.

Globiqo is built around the belief that discovering those experiences should be simpler.

From personal experience to entrepreneurship

For Temi, the development of Globiqo also reflects lessons from his personal journey.

His university experience was far from straightforward, with an eight-year journey marked by setbacks, financial pressure and difficult personal experiences.

However, his experiences at home and abroad also shaped his understanding of the importance of community and connection.

Rather than simply viewing the challenges of finding events and communities as an inconvenience, he identified an opportunity to develop a solution.

The bigger question

Every startup begins with a problem or a question that someone believes deserves a better answer.

For Globiqo, the question was simple: What if finding events, experiences and communities did not require searching across numerous platforms?

That question transformed a December evening of scrolling through Instagram into the beginning of a business idea.

What started as one person's frustration has now developed into an attempt to build a platform that can make event discovery and community connection easier for people around the world.

For Temi, the journey from scrolling through Instagram to building Globiqo underscores a simple lesson in entrepreneurship: some of the most valuable startup ideas can emerge from everyday frustrations.

Sometimes, the opportunity is there — hidden in the problem people experience every day.
